Nollywood has seen different films that have made their mark, films that have shown that audiences are interested in watching Nigerian stories in cinemas, from the past till now.

Here are some of the Nollywood hits that we think are worth watching.

A Tribe Called Judah

A Tribe Called Judah was the first Nollywood film to cross the ₦1 billion mark, grossing ₦1,408,277,541 in 2023. This was the moment Funke Akindele really cemented herself as the box office queen.

At its centre is a single mother, played by Akindele, raising five sons from different fathers. When she develops a chronic kidney disease and needs ₦18 million for surgery, her sons take a desperate route, turning to robbery in a bid to save her life. You can watch this on Prime Video.

The Wedding Party

A Nollywood staple that everybody loved and still loves. Released in 2017 and directed by Kemi Adetiba, the film made close to half a million naira at the box office—proof that Nigerians have long shown up for cinema, even before today’s tougher economy.

Set around a high-profile Lagos wedding, what should be a perfect day quickly unravels as family tensions, class clashes, and hidden secrets spill into the open. The film is also remembered for the chemistry between Banky W and Adesua Etomi, a connection that made their real-life relationship announcement even more exciting. It also stars veteran actors like Richard Mofe-Damijo and Ireti Doyle as the groom’s parents, and Sola Sobowale as the bride’s mom. It is now streaming on Kava.

Sugar Rush

Chaos kicks off when three sisters stumble on a huge sum of money, pulling them into a messy chase involving criminals, law enforcement, and their own survival. It’s a crime-action comedy that leans fully into humour and absurdity.

The film brought together Bisola Aiyeola and Bimbo Ademoye as sisters—a dynamic that has carried into their real-life friendship since then. Directed by Kayode Kasum, Sugar Rush grossed ₦287,053,217. It is still showing on Netflix.

Reel Love

This romantic comedy, directed by Kayode Kasum and produced by Timini Egbuson, was a Valentine’s release in 2025 and made ₦356,824,175. For a romantic comedy in Nollywood’s current blockbuster-heavy era, that number said a lot.

Here, a popular influencer (Timini Egbuson) finds himself entangled with a woman (TJ Omusuku) after a heated argument between them goes viral. To manage the fallout, they agree to fake a relationship, but as they keep up appearances, the line between performance and reality begins to blur. If you want to see it, head over to Kava.

Alakada Bad and Boujee

Directed by Adebayo Tijani and produced by Toyin Abraham, this film continues the Alakada franchise. It grossed ₦500,581,650 at the box office.

This time, the story leans into the chaos of a young woman obsessed with projecting a fake high-class lifestyle, constantly landing herself in outrageous situations as she tries to keep up appearances and be seen as “bad and boujee.” It stars Toyin Abraham, Odunlade Adekola, Bimbo Akintola, Chimezie Imo, and Yemi Elesho.
